Aspiring Social Workers
Award: Tuition for one to two semesters. (Depending on GPA and student need)
BASIC ELIGIBILITY
To apply, you must be:
Currently enrolled in an MSW program at Albany State University (ASU) or Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University (FAMU). Student must show proof of enrollment and registration (this must include an official transcript and proof of enrollment status)
A US citizen, national, or permanent resident. Must show proof of residency. (Birth Certificate, Social Security Card, U. S. Passport, Citizenship Certificate, Certificate of Naturalization)
Must be in good academic standing with a minimum cumulative/overall GPA weighted at 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent) Must submit transcripts from all colleges & institutions you have attended.
Demonstrate a financial need (must show proof of need or proof of other financial aid received)
Complete a writing statement (see instructions below).
IDEAL CANDIDATE
Each candidate should have the following:
An outstanding academic record from undergraduate studies or graduate studies (in the top 10% of his/her graduating class)
Demonstrated leadership ability (e.g., as shown through participation in community service, extracurricular, or other activities)
Exceptional personal success skills (e.g., emotional maturity, motivation, perseverance, etc.)
What's In Your Essay
Please submit all documents include: proof of enrollment and registration status; official transcripts from all colleges/institution you have attended; proof of citizenship; proof of financial aid being received (if not receiving any financial aid, you must show proof of this also); and your writing statement.

As a part of your application for the Marilyn Spearman Scholarship, you are to write a statement which addresses the areas listed below. This statement will be used to assist the Spearman Scholarship Committee in their decision making process for all applicants. The Writing Statement must be types, well written, and in APA format.
WRITING STATEMENT
Please respond to the following in narrative format:
* Discuss the major reasons for your interest in the Social Work profession.
* Describe some of the successes you have achieved in school, employment, and in your personal life as a result of pursuing or earning a degree in social work.
* Describe any barriers you have had to overcome while pursuing your educational, employment, and personal goals.
* How will you benefit from from receiving this scholarship?
* If you are not awarded this scholarship, what are your plans for continuing your education and paying your tuition?
* Why do you deserve this scholarship?
